The Fear of How to Answer "What Activities Did you Participate in??

The Common Application is now becoming standard use in the college application process. Last year, almost 2 million high school students submitted applications via th College App Online. These applications went to 415 member colleges and universities in the United States.
On the application, the student is asked to go into detail regarding extracurricular participation, work experiences and other relevant and meaningful experiences that the student participated in over the span of their High School years. Often tmes, this section becomes the most anxiety provoking.
How can a student best prepare for that inevitable essay or listing experiences of activities to set them apart or above other applicants? Colleges are not interested in hearing about the privileged activities that students participated in during the summer months. But rather, it is the translation of these experiences- how and why a student's life was enriched- that the schools want to know about. A key event, a relationship formed, a volunteer program, a subject where the student has gained orificiency during any of those summer programs attended can be the focal point of an amazing essay. It's not the vehicle that took the student to the even...it is the event itself.
